Import Restrictions

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

  • seeds
  • soils samples and soil in general

When importing agricultural and livestock products into Korea, an importer is required to apply for quarantine inspection and obtain a certificate of inspection from the relevent government agencies, which then must be attached to the import declaration.

Fresh plant products, food products and livestock products require Sanitary Quarantine Inspection Certificates from the National Plant Quarantine Service, Korea Food and Drug Administration and the National Veterinary Research & Quarantine Services respectively.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter by the Canada Post Corporation Act & Regulations (refer to the Canada Postal Guide under "Non-mailable Matter"), the following are prohibited:

  • arms and ammunition, firearms and explosives
  • beverages and spirits
  • birds; eggs or processing products
  • birds in danger of extintion
  • bows
  • cereals
  • counterfeit products
  • currency, bank notes, securities
  • dairy products
  • drugs
  • dehydrepiandrosterone (DHEA) Hormone Drug
  • farming seeds
  • electrical machinery
  • hemp
  • honey
  • human remains by epidemic disease
  • graphite products
  • meat and meat-based products
  • military weapons
  • natural or cultured pearls
  • optical, photographic and cinematographic materials
  • oil products
  • pet foods, hay and their processed products
  • plastics and articles thereof
  • plant and plant products
  • poppy seeds
  • potatoes
  • products that violate copyright
  • prohibited tobaccos
  • precious and semi-precious stones and metals
  • raw hides and skins
  • rice
  • silkworm eggs

  • sweet potatoes.

Small items up to a value of 150,000 Won are admitted free of duty if appropriately labelled: gift, sample, goods returned, temporary import, etc.

The following documents may be required:

1. Commercial Invoice

2. Value Declaration

3. Certificate of Origin

4. Quarantine Inspection

5. Phytosanitary Certificate.

Custom Procedures:

The Simplified Declaration with the declaration form may be used to clear goods for import specified below without additional documents:

  • Goods with the total dutiable amount of less than 150,000 won, deemed as the goods for personal use are duty free
  • Commercial duty free samples with a value of less than US $250
  • Import Approval is exempt if a good is in the process of being designed.
