Import Restrictions

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

  • coffee
  • firearm parts
  • foodstuffs
  • pharmaceutical products
  • parasites and insect killers
  • saccharine
  • spirits and liqueur essences
  • sugar.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

  • abortion-inducing items
  • animal and animal parts
  • asbestos
  • bees
  • bullion and currency
  • chemical substances used for fabricating wine
  • cigarette papers
  • concentrated wines
  • contraceptives
  • deeds
  • gambling machines
  • items contrary to the political, social and economic order of the State
  • ivory
  • jewellery, precious stones and metals
  • leeches
  • lithium batteries (installed in equipment, or batteries on their own)
  • log and timber products from Liberia
  • must and chemical substances useable for fabricating wines
  • silkworms
  • subversive Material.

Documentation Required

Information regarding Customs can be found in "Customs Requirements" of the Canada Postal Guide.

Adhesive tape used in packaging goods mailed to El Salvador must bear the name and mark, stamp or signature of the sender.

Commercial packages require an accompanying invoice with a duplicate copy posted separately to the addressee.

Commercial invoices are not necessary for non-commercial shipments valued at less than USD 100.00 FOB, when sent by parcel post or air cargo, or samples brought in by accompanying personal.

Commercial Invoice - A commercial invoice is required for most commercial shipments and must be in Spanish. At least three (3) original, signed and certifiied copies should be included in the shipping documents.

Following the above, there should be a declaration, signed by the shipper stating that all the costs and expenses are correct. Original signatures in ink are required on all copies.

Certificate of Origin - A certificate of origin is needed for pesticides and goods subject to preferential treatment. Three (3) copies should be provided.

Insurance Certificate - An insurance certificate is required for evidence of insurance coverage.

Certain products including; meat and meat products, dairy products, lard, cod liver oil, wheat and rye flour, opium and fertilizers require a Certificate of Analysis. A phytosanitary certificate or health certificate is required for certain products.
