Import Restrictions

Senders should determine import restrictions from the country's authorities before posting:

Gifts

Norway admits gifts duty-free to a value of 1000 NOK. Gifts of spirits, wines, liqueurs and tobacco are not duty-free.

Small value items

Except for mail order items, alcoholic beverages and tobacco, imported goods with a value under 200 NOK (Norwegian krone) are admitted free of duty and taxes.

Prohibited Items

In addition to items considered non-mailable matter, the following are prohibited:

  • animal carcasses

  • drugs, prescription
  • products made of or containing wild oats
  • products of the milling industry
  • satellite
  • seeds
  • live animals
  • meat and meat products
  • seeds for sowing
  • ores
  • potatoes
  • Benzol, Xylol, Cresote oils and Gasoline

  • soil
  • viagra
  • weapons including all firearms, crossbows, bladed weapons, etc.

Documentation Required

Information regarding Customs can be found in "Customs Requirements" of the Canada Postal Guide.

The following are potential documents/ permits which may be required for restricted items:

1. License and import permit from police

2. License and import permit from Directorate for Civil protection and emergency planning

3. License from the Norwegian Medicines Agency

4. Import permit from Directorate for Nature Management

5. Import permit from Ministry of Church and Cultural affairs

6. CVED or veterinary/health certificate from Norwegian Food Authority

7. CE-certificate (Directorate for Civil protection and Emergency Planning)

8. Permit from Norwegian Pollution Control Authority.

In addition, commercial goods mailed to Norway require an invoice.

Customs Procedures:

Customs declaration is based on the Single Administrative Document (SAD). Norway Post has the authorization to select which shipments are duty free, and in certain circumstances, distribute directly upon receipt. Norway Post can offer standard procedure for shipments over 200 NOK to companies or for shipments over 1000 NOK to private consumers. Norway Post calculates duty/tax to be paid, and then forwards the shipment to the addresse’s local post office. The customs delcaration and taxes due are then transferred to Norwegian Customs.
